As the deadline for submitting the self assessment (SA) tax return for 2024/25 falls on a Saturday, taxpayers and agents who may need help from HMRC are advised to submit their returns on or before 30 January 2026.
The deadline for submitting the SA tax return for 2024/25 and paying any tax due is Saturday, 31 January 2026. This may cause issues for late filers who could face challenges in contacting HMRC. In Agent Update 139, HMRC has advised that the SA helpline for taxpayers and the agent dedicated line will close at 6pm on Friday, 30 January 2026 and reopen, at 8am on Monday, 2 February 2026, as normal.
Tax return trivia
On 5 January 2026, HMRC reported that 5.65m taxpayers had yet to file their tax return for 2024/25.
732,498 tax returns were filed on the 31 January 2025 deadline for 2023/24 tax return, of which 31,442 were filed between 23:00 and 23:59.
HMRC says that enhanced webchat services for taxpayers and agents, with more advisers than usual to provide support, will be available between 8am and 4pm on Saturday, 31 January 2026. HMRC’s online agent services will continue to be available.
The enhanced webchat service will be available for queries about 2024/25 tax returns and payment, online services and bereavement. A call-back process for vulnerable customers needing extra support or complex case team assistance will be provided.
